OPENINGS IN MAGAZINES/PUBLISHING
Having grown from a small town community publication with grass roots beginnings, Yellow Scene Magazine is established as the premiere voice of the emerging North Metro/Boulder County market. Currently distributing 65,000 we are increasing to 70,000 in 09 as well as expanding both content and size. We seek a visionary that can work in our small, understaffed, over-worked environment. Someone who grasps our basic identity, as well as lead us to new heights as a top City/Regional publication. An identity that includes an understanding that we've created our following for both our humorous nature, exhaustive arts & entertainment coverage, as well as for the reasoned stands we take in our news coverage and commentary. As a small organization of 10 full time employees the ability to cross over into other departments and help perform a multitude of tasks (some not even within the job definition) is an absolute. Strong arts, cultural and marketing insight required to continue to grow and brand our product within the marketplace. You will be responsible for a small team of freelancers with a budget that's half as big as it should be, as well as writing several articles each month. The best candidates will have journalism experience and be able to provide a variety of published writing samples with their application. Having well-formed ideas on what it means to remain 'relevant' in an increasingly competitive marketplace. and a good sense for business will help your application to stand out from the crowd. This comes with the understanding that the first focus must always remain on engaging, thought-provoking discussion of local, regional, and national issues. Specifically, our editor's responsibilities include (but are not limited to) all the standard fare: managing freelancers, writing articles, meeting deadlines, getting to know the political players, attending functions, working closely with the Creative Director and arguing with the Publisher about editorial space and budgets. However, this is only part of the job. We pride ourselves on being an intimate team who works closely together. Often this includes brainstorming sessions for developing special issue editorial ideas, cutting edge ad campaigns (our policy is to go above and beyond for our clients), and even cover ideas, helping to update the website, photography and proofreading, even doing the dirty work of helping on Warehouse Day with distribution. The opportunities for a talented, creative, ambitious journalist are unlimited. Resume must be accompanied by a cover letter specifically detailing your interest in this position and samples of published work. Please send resume and cover letter to: advertising@yellowscene.com

OPENINGS IN ONLINE MEDIA
Description:
While newspapers are cutting jobs, we're adding them. SmartBrief is seeking full-time copy editors, continuing the expansion of our editorial operations for our online business and consumer news publications. What we're looking for: Someone who loves editing and who thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-intensive, daily-newsroom-style work environment. Someone who knows when to give ground on a potential issue and when to keep pushing beyond the first couple of ‛I think it's fine“ responses. Preferably someone who has worked as a slot on a daily newspaper's copy desk, or maybe just been on the track to work in that role.

Our briefs summarize the top stories of the day for scores of industry associations, and our copy editors read for content, AP style and grammar while working under tight deadlines. The pace is along the lines of a medium-sized newspaper copy desk, and with briefs going out all day, the deadlines have some similarities to wire service operations.

These positions will be based at our Washington, D.C., offices, and, like all of our jobs, are for daytime hours on weekdays. Selected applicants will be required to take a timed editing test.

Required skills & experience: • At least two years of experience as a journalist, including direct copy-editing experience. Slot experience at a daily newspaper is preferred. Candidates with proven journalistic writing and editing skills may also be considered. • Strong knowledge of AP style. • Ability to edit quickly and accurately on deadline. • Facility for using online publishing and communication tools. • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.

About SmartBrief Founded in 1999, SmartBrief is the leader in customized e-mail news services and reaches top-flight executives in a variety of markets, including advertising, retail, hospitality, telecom, health care and consumer packaged goods.
